Rockville-Pinneberg
60th Anniversary - 2017 !

For an amazing 60 years Pinneberg and Rockville have maintained a meaningful and intense friendship.  The initiators were former mayors Henry Glissmann (SPD) and Dickran Hovsepian.  The German-American Society Rockville-Pinneberg, founded in 1984, is under the leadership of Bernd Hinrichs since 2007.  The Pinneberg City leadership has dedicated a Rockville Room at City Hall.  The corresponding organization in Rockville was founded in 1983 under the name of Rockville Sister City Corporation.

AUGUST 2017 - RSCC OFFICERS ATTEND TRI-SISTER CITY MEETING IN HAGERSTOWN

RSCC'S Officers and two guests (members George Albrecht and Claire Whitaker) partook in a multiple sister city gathering during Hagerstown's Augustoberfest recently.  The purpose was to learn about the others' approach to Sister City relations with their German cities and to discuss common problems facing all three of our German-related organizations.  Interesting aspects and differing approaches were discussed by all representatives, and a common point of agreement was hoping members of each organiztion would participate in events held or supported by the others.  For example, we hope to see some representatives come to our upcoming Rocktobierfest, and we hope to help out at the Schifferstadt Museum's Oktoberfest soon.  We also plan to have a rotating dinner at a German restaurant in the future; each city's organization would host a dinner or lunch event perhaps once a year in or near its city.  Stay tuned, we hope things will gel on this idea.

AUGUST 2017 - HANS GEORG BEPLAT AND ILKA ALLWARDT
HOSTED BY BRIGITTA MULLICAN

Former DAGRP President Hans Georg Beplat and his caregiver/travel companion Ilka Allwardt were the guests of RSCC Vice-President Brigitta Mullican from September 10-17 as a "thank you" for them hosting her and George Albrecht during the 60th Anniversary festivities in Pinneberg.  Hans Georg and Ilka traveled from Southampton, England to New York City via the luxurious Queen Mary 2, spent a few days in NYC, then took AMTRAK to Union Station.  While in the Rockville area they visited many sites in DC, as well as numerous sites in and around Rockville.  Although Hans Georg has been to Rockville on numerous occasions, it was the first time in both Rockville and the USA for Ilka.  Both attended RSCC's Annual Meeting, and Hans Georg echoed the words of former RSCC President Jim Patrician to the audience: "We are not only friends, we are family."

RSCC ANNUAL MEETING
RSCC held its Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, September 13, at the Glenview Mansion.  It started with a social hour of hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and included briefings by all RSCC Officers and Committee Chairs.  Special emphasis was given to the activities being planned for the upcoming visit of the Pinneberg 60th Anniversary Delegation and the Indian Summer Tour during the first week in October.  We thank all members who attended, and especially Mayor Newton, Council Member Feinberg, City Clerk Conway and other representatives from the present and past Rockville City governments.  In addition to the informative presentations, the General Membership in attendance voted on nominees to RSCC’s Board of Directors and also on the approval of the 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes.

A great turn-out!

RSCC FRIENDS ATTEND "U.S. WEDDING" OF DAVID PATRICIAN
Numerous former school and work acquaintances, friends and neighbors were invited to the "U.S. Wedding" of RSCC Family Members David and Nadine Patrician in Glen Allen, VA in mid-September.  On June 27, 2015 Nadine and David were married in Germany.  They celebrated with around 120 family and friends, mostly from Europe, but also a few from the U.S.!  They always planned on celebrating "Part 2" of their wedding back in the DC area.  Last year they had a wonderful reason to postpone: on May 27th, 2016, their daughter Ellie was born.  "Part 2" of their wedding occurred with friends and family on September 16, 2017.   David lives in the Hamburg, Germany area and has been active in various communications endeavors, including reporting for Westdeutscher Rundfunk, having his own radio and TV shows in Germany, working for Radio Free Europe and teaching in South Korea.  He was a full-year Rockville high school exchange student in Pinneberg.

ROCKVILLE'S VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DAY

The City of Rockville Volunteer Appreciation Party occurred at Glenview Mansion on Tuesday, September 19th.  It was a good time for all and an opportunity to connect with City of Rockville elected officials, staff and other members of Rockville Boards and Commissions.  The majority of RSCC's Board was in attendance.  Director Steve VanGrack was uable to attend because of the birth of his 6th grandchild, Elizabeth (Libby) VanGrack.  Congratulations, Steve and Sue!

MEMBERSHIP DUES INFORMATION

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR....
TIME TO JOIN RSCC OR RENEW
YOUR MEMBERSHIP FOR 2017.
Please do it NOW.  Do it
here.

MEMBERSHIPS ARE FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR (Jan-Dec)
We urge new and renewing members to send in their Membership Dues for 2017 as soon as you can.

YOU CAN HELP OUR MEMBERSHIP CHAIR AND TREASURER IMMENSELY IF YOU RENEW OR JOIN DURING JANUARY/FEBRUARY EACH YEAR.  THANKS!

By recommendation of the Board of Directors, RSCC has instituted a new three-tiered
membership structure
:
Student, Individual/Family, and Corporate Sponsors.

The change in RSCC dues is necessary in order to continue our mission of facilitating Rockville's Sister City relationship with Pinneberg, Germany and Rockville's Friendship City relationship with Jiaxing, China, which includes an increasing number of local and international cross cultural activities and events.

RSCC has created a new Student Membership category.  There is no fee for this membership.  The Student Membership is designed to introduce students to the activities and programs of the Sister City organization and attract students to become active in these activities.  The student membership provides students with opportunities to create projects related to our German and Chinese sister and friendship cities and earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.  The new Point of Contact is RSCC Committee Member Christian Jessen-Klingenberg ( c.j-k@t-online.de).

As of January 1, 2017, Membership Dues were increased to $25 for Individual Membership and $40 for Family Membership.

At the February 2017 Board Meeting, it was decided to create three levels of Corporate Sponsorship (Gold, Silver and Bronze), based on a corporation's ability and desire to provide support to RSCC.

All three forms can be found
HERE.
The Board feels these modest increases are in line with other Rockville-based non-profit organization's dues, and the fact that RSCC's dues had remained at fixed low prices for decades.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  And THANK YOU again for your continued support of RSCC!

Drew Powell
RSCC PRESIDENT

German Life Magazine - as described by David E. L'Heureux, former President Emeritus, RSCC:

"One of the finest magazines I have seen.  Over a period of time this very informative bi-monthly magazine in English provides you with an excellent view of Germany, German life, culture, society, festivities, food, sightseeing and everything else you might want to know about in a very attractive glossy-paged publication.  Not only are the presentations wonderful, but there are also ads leading to German clothing, food, recipes, books, music, souvenirs and activities in the United States.  Pictures abound.  Issues are not only informative, but educational as well.  Great for adults and children as well....  By the time you put down one issue, the next one is at hand."

Paid members of RSCC are eligible for a discounted annual rate of $17.95 (vs regular subscription rate for one year - 6 issues - of $24.95) when subscribing to German Life Magazine.  Here is the form you should use:
