For an amazing 60 years Pinneberg and Rockville have maintained a meaningful and intense friendship. The initiators were former mayors Henry Glissmann (SPD) and Dickran Hovsepian. The German-American Society Rockville-Pinneberg, founded in 1984, is under the leadership of Bernd Hinrichs since 2007. The Pinneberg City leadership has dedicated a Rockville Room at City Hall. The corresponding organization in Rockville was founded in 1983 under the name of Rockville Sister City Corporation.

JIAXING FRIENDSHIP GARDEN"I saw a photo of the tree planting at the White House garden yesterday [Trump/Macrone; 4/24/18] which reminded me that a Rockville delegation had planted a tree at the Jiaxing Friendship Garden in 2012. I believe tree planting is a good symbol of a long-term friendship." Bing Huang (RSCC Director)

PEONY GARDEN AT GLENVIEW MANSION
RSCC Director Bing Huang also reported: "I went to the Peony Garden yesterday (April 28, 2018); the peonies are about to bloom, probably next week."
We hope you can take the opportunity to visit the peony garden at the Glenview Mansion soon! It was a gift from Dr and Mrs Nelson Hsu from their personal garden collection. The peony is "among the longest-used flowers in Eastern culture ... it is a traditional floral symbol of China, where ... it is also known as 'flower of riches and honour' or 'king of the flowers', and is used symbolically in Chinese art. In 1903, the Qing dynasty declared the peony as the national flower." [Wikipedia]
On May 4th, Rob Orndorff, Horticulturist for the City of Rockville wrote, "The peonies have started to flower in the formal gardens at Glenview Mansion. I anticipate that they will continue flowering for the next two to three weeks. Enjoy."

JIAXING "REUNION" DINNER
A dinner was held on May 3, 2018 at the Seven Seas Restaurant in Rockville as a kind of "mini-reunion" for those who have visited our Friendship City (Jiaxing), those born in or coming from the Jiaxing area, and prospective new RSCC members. Attendees were treated to some great Chinese food (lobster was on the menu!) and RSCC Directors Bing Huang and Ying Chen were primarily responsible for the night's agenda. Also in attendance were RSCC Directors Jack Rodgers (and wife Pat), Bob Wright, Liz von Kaenel, Treasurer Marika Brown, VP Brigitta Mullican, and Members Chris Luckman, Lynn Mandujano, Kent Wong, Wendy Lui (Nexus Holidays), Victor Chang (99 years old; born in Jiaxing), and Jay Wang.
Also in attendance were: New members of RSCC Bin Liu, Zhen Zheng (Jiaxing born), Hema Chaurasia, David Fu, Pengli Zhen and Jun Xu; from the APA task force: Zenya Li and John Lin; Richard McPherson (from the Avalon School), wife Janice and daughter Maggie, Avalon Chinese student Kuanyu Li; Zhejiang Association VP James Bao and wife Jiahong Gu, and his Jiaxing friend Rose Shen.
President Drew Powell had a previous committment that night, but stopped by to welcome the crowd and seek additional members and volunteers to work on the Jiaxing Committee.
Bing ran a PowerPoint presentation showing various Jiaxing/Rockville activities since 2009. A nice event filled with memories and good food.

German Life Magazine - as described by David E. L'Heureux, former President Emeritus, RSCC:
"One of the finest magazines I have seen. Over a period of time this very informative bi-monthly magazine in English provides you with an excellent view of Germany, German life, culture, society, festivities, food, sightseeing and everything else you might want to know about in a very attractive glossy-paged publication. Not only are the presentations wonderful, but there are also ads leading to German clothing, food, recipes, books, music, souvenirs and activities in the United States. Pictures abound. Issues are not only informative, but educational as well. Great for adults and children as well.... By the time you put down one issue, the next one is at hand."
Paid members of RSCC are eligible for a discounted annual rate of $17.95 (vs regular subscription rate for one year - 6 issues - of $24.95) when subscribing to German Life Magazine. Here is the form you should use:
